Validation and Verification in Social Simulation: Patterns and Clarification of Terminology

چکیده

The terms ‘verification’ and ‘validation’ are widely used both in the natural and the social sciences. They are extensively used in simulation, and are often associated with the need to evaluate models at different stages of the simulation development process. Frequently, terminological ambiguities arise when researchers conflate, along the simulation development process, the technical meanings of both terms with other meanings found in the social sciences and the philosophy of science. This article considers the problem of verification and validation in social science simulation along five perspectives: The reasons to address terminological issues in simulation; the meaning of the terms in the philosophical sense of the problem of “truth”; the observation that some debates about these terms in simulation are inadvertently more terminological than epistemological; the meaning of the terms in the technical context of the simulation development process; and a comprehensive outline of the relation among terminology used in simulation, different types of models used in the development process and different epistemological perspectives.

Verification and Validation of Common Derivative Terms Approximation in Meshfree Numerical Scheme

In order to improve the approximation of spatial derivatives without meshes, a set of meshfree numerical schemes for derivative terms is developed, which is compatible with the coordinates of Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical. Based on the comparisons between numerical and theoretical solutions, errors and convergences are assessed by a posteriori method, which shows that the approximations...

Checking Models, Proving Programs, and Testing Systems

We are all faced up to a flowering of concepts and methods in the area of software verification and validation, due to significant advances in the domain. This paper considers the main terms and expressions currently in use on the subjects of model, specification, program, system, proof, checking, testing. Some analysis of the use and combination of these terms is sketched, pointing out some co...

Simulation and Model Validation of Batch PHB Production Process Using Ralstonia eutropha

Mathematical modeling and simulation of microbial Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production process is beneficial for optimization, design, and control purposes. In this study a batch model developed by Mulchandani et al., [1] was used to simulate the process in MATLAB environment. It was revealed that the kinetic model parameters were estimated off the optimal or at a local optimal point. There...

Numerical simulation of hull and propeller interaction in acceleration maneuver

Prediction of a ship’s trajectory during a maneuvering motion is so important. In this study, the acceleration maneuver for a twin-screw vessel is directly investigated using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) environment and unsteady RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) solver. For this purpose, the self-propulsion and acceleration simulations with hull and propeller interaction for the well-...

Comparison of Antibiogram Results of Two Types of Antibiotic Discs and Validation by E.test Method on Bacteria with High Antibiotic Resistance Patterns

Background and Objective: The increased resistance of microorganisms to common antibiotics is one of the major therapeutic challenges for patients. The present study aimed to compare the antibiogram results of two types of antibiotic discs and validate them by the Epsilometer test (E-test) method on bacteria with high antibiotic resistance patterns. Materials and Methods: This descriptive-anal...
